Bill Gillis
Vice President, Chief Information Officer

Bill Gillis is the Vice President, Chief Information Officer (VP, CIO) for Beth Israel Lahey Performance Network (BILPN), a clinically integrated network of physicians, clinicians and hospitals in Eastern Massachusetts committed to providing high-quality, cost-effective care to the patients and communities they serve, while effectively managing medical expense.


In his role, Bill leads Health Information Technology (HIT) innovations that support BILPN’s population health, care management, and analytics initiatives. Having worked in health care IT for more than twenty years, Bill specializes in electronic health records (EHR) and health information exchange (HIE) interoperability strategies, technologies and deployments. Working directly with the previous CIO for the Beth Israel Deaconess system John Halamka (who is today the Executive Director of the Health Technology Exploration Center of Beth Israel Lahey Health), Bill led the team that deployed the first ambulatory EHR system for BIDMC affiliates in 1997.


Prior to his role with BILPN, Bill was the CIO for Beth Israel Deaconess Care Organization (BIDCO). He led the BIDCO team that architected and deployed what is believed to be one of the first cloud-based EHR offering in the country, enabling significant Triple-Aim improvements that helped the organization achieve ranking as the #1 performing Pioneer ACO in Massachusetts and #3 nationally in 2013, as well as the top-performing ACO in quality reporting in 2015. Bill also led the launch of an advanced population health platform that leverages real-time EHR data delivery for analytics to support a network of 2,500 physicians, including 500 PCPs, and eight hospitals in the delivery of high-quality, cost-effective care.


Bill is a leading, national authority sought after for his compelling historical perspective on HIT, innovative solutions to current industry technology challenges and his thought leadership. He is often called on to provide expert commentary on emerging trends in health care IT for some of the leading industry news health care brands, Healthcare Informatics, Health IT News, Health Data Management, HIT Outcomes, Health Leaders, SearchHealthIT, Tech Target, Search CIO, and Health Tech Magazine.


Bill has also led public roundtable discussions, panels and notable keynote addresses including at Healthcare Information and Management Systems Society (HIMSS) conferences, Value-Based Care Summit Series, AI in Healthcare Summit, Becker’s Hospital Review conferences and Healthcare Innovation’s, Health IT Summit, among others. He has also delivered speeches for Harvard Medical School, Boston University, and Suffolk University.


In his free time, Bill works with several nonprofit organizations whose mission is to improve health care in developing countries through the use of technology. Along with esteemed HIT accomplishments, Bill is also a passionate motorsport athlete who has competed in several international motorsports events such as the Daytona 200, Isle of Man TT, FIM Supermono World Championship and the Bonneville Speed Trails.


Bill holds a Master of Science degree in Computer Engineering.
